Wilfie, Wilfred, Will, Wilf, Mr. snowman apple cheeks, he has many names. All of which guarantee an excited whistle. He is a stunning boy; white & silver feathers bless his soft pink skin. There is so much to love about Wilf, he is the most incredible little guy who is endlessly in a state of joy. Sadly though, people who look at him only see 1 thing- he has 1 leg. It really doesn’t bother him or hold him back at all. He has ongoing treatment & physio to ensure he is comfortable & doesn’t have a return of the pressure sore he had when he came to me. Why does he have 1 leg? He had to have 1 leg because there is so much awesomeness crammed into his gorgeous little body that it exceeded the legal limit & he had to have 1 leg to bring it down to legal levels. At least, that’s the story I tell him as he gazes faithfully into my face as I cradle him just the way he likes. Will loves to be held, kissed & cuddled, he sometimes makes a certain little noise which means he wants me to go & pick him up & answer him like a phone! One of his favorite things to do is lay on his back in the palm of my hand while I shower him with compliments & tell him how loved & wanted, he is. I assumed that Wilf loves to be held by everybody in his life, but it turns out he only wants it from me. If my parents try to touch him at all he will bite them very hard.
This is such an important thing to remember, not every Bird wants to be tame, but if they do it doesn’t mean they should be happy to be touched by everybody & anybody. I love my wilf just as much as I love my Birds from abusive backgrounds who are never ok with being touched. Wilf loves being held so much, he loves it because he knows that it is in his own way, at his own pace & only with the person he is comfortable with. He looks at me as if I am his whole world, I am proud to say he is mine too. How precious to honor such trust by making sure that he is nothing but understood.
