Why don’t my Harrison’s nuggets look the same every time?

Storage and Shelf Life
Harrison's is committed to protecting your bird from artificial preservatives. Here are some suggestions to keep your food fresh without preservatives:
- Squeeze all air out of the bag and zip it shut at the top.
- If the zip lock gets removed or damaged, fold the top over several times and close with a clip.
- Keep food in original bag. Do not repackage into plastic bags or containers.
- Use contents within 8 weeks of opening bag.
- Purchase Harrison's foods only in their original packaging.
- Refrigeration or freezing after opening may help maintain freshness.
Feeding Directions
Caution: The correct feeding technique must be used in order to prevent injury to the bird or inhalation of the formula that could result in pneumonia or death.
Species:
- From day 1 for pionus, African greys, Amazons, cockatoos, conures and macaws.
- From day 7 for other parrots.
- From day 21 for cockatiels.
Step 1: Gently feel the crop to determine that it is almost empty before feeding.
Step 2: Mix fresh: Juvenile Hand-Feeding Formula and bottled “drinking water” heated to approximately 103°F (39°C). Follow proportion of formula to water as directed by your avian veterinarian for the age of your bird. Do not microwave. Allow to cool to lukewarm. Chicks with their eyes opened should be fed 3-4 times daily, and birds with feathers emerging, 2-3 times daily.
Step 3: Feeding with an irrigation syringe is probably the most universally successful technique.
Step 4: Feed the bird until the crop is full but not overstuffed, and clean the excess formula from the bird’s beak, feathers and enclosure.
Feeding Suggestions
- One to seven day-old birds and birds with slow crop-emptying may benefit from the use of Recovery Formula or adding a pinch of Fauna Flora to the Formula just prior to feeding.
- To aid weaning after 21 days of age, add 1 Tbs finely chopped High Potency Formula or finely chopped organic nuts to 1 cup of Formula or introduce dry High Potency Formula in a separate bowl.
Other Foods
A bird's daily diet should be 75-80% Harrison's Bird Foods, 15-20% organic dark green leafy or dark yellow meaty vegetables and fruits (including sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, winter squash, broccoli, parsley, spinach, mango or papaya). Do not offer vitamins unless directed by your avian veterinarian. Do not use other formulated diets in conjunction with Harrison's or you could reduce the benefits. Harrison's ingredients are not processed in a manner that destroys naturally occurring seasonal characteristics. Variations in color, texture and nugget size may result and are normal.
