How to Live with an Alexandrine Parakeet

Alexandrine parakeets are popular because of their beauty, intelligence, talking ability and interaction with humans. Alexandrines are extremely independent and playful. They can easily keep themselves entertained by talking and whistling happily to themselves or by studiously chewing on bird toys. They also tend to bond with a single person, which may result in behavior that is territorial.

What to Know About Your Alexandrine Parakeet

Alexandrine parakeets are native to India and Sri Lanka, although feral populations are found in Europe and elsewhere. They are the largest of the Asiatic parakeets, and were named after Alexander, the Great. They may be as long as 25 inches, with half the length being the tail. They can live up to 40 years.

Is My Alexandrine a Boy or Girl?

Adult males have a black and rose-colored ring around their neck, which is not present in adult females.

How to Keep Your Alexandrine Happy

Alexandrines will be happy in a large flight cage where they have lots of chewable toys and frequent interactions with humans. They are known to develop a vocabulary and carry on conversations with humans as well as themselves. They are generally nondestructive, even with their large beak. Diseases that alexandrines may be susceptible to are polyomavirus, psittacosis and aspergillosis.
