Mynah birds (as part of the passerine family, which includes starlings) are lively, social birds with outgoing personalities. They require a large cage, preferable outdoors in a temperate environment, as they are very active and messy birds. Because of the large volumes of moist food in their diet, their droppings are frequent, loose and often projectile. They enthusiastically enjoy baths making a further mess. These characteristics make them less desirable as pets. Young, hand-fed babies that are socialized with humans may make better pets. At this age, they also learn to talk better and adapt readily to new environments.
Although toucans are in the Rhamphastid family and mynahs and starlings are passerines, they share the common propensity to iron storage disease. They also may exhibit obesity, fatty tumors, xanthomas, reproductive and feather problems. The low levels of iron in Harrison’s formulations reduce the risk of iron storage disease, to which these species are particularly prone.
