Eclectus parrots are colorful, intelligent, quiet birds that are visibly dimorphic (females are predominately red and males are green). Females can be a bit more aggressive while males are more docile. Although they are not known for biting and may not be good pets for children, they could still be part of a family with supervision of the interactions. Eclectus are not known for loud squawking, but they can be taught to speak and sing. They require lots of attention and stimulation in captivity, including toys to chew on. Because of their sensitive nature, they are susceptible to stress, which may result in feather picking. There are reports of eclectus parrots developing a nervous habit called “toe tapping.” If the birds are otherwise healthy, the condition may abate with time. There is some suspicion that birds “toe tap” as a preliminary part of a viral disease; such cases are not related to diet. It is essential that clients with an eclectus parrot that exhibits toe tapping work with an avian veterinarian immediately, because early therapy has been considered effective.
