Doves and pigeons, both members of the Columbidae family of birds, have enjoyed a close relationship with man for centuries. Although technically the same animal, doves are smaller than pigeons and appreciated for their gentle, quiet nature.Thriving in bonded pairs of any gender combination, doves also develop a deep affection for their human keepers and need a real relationship with their people. With a projected lifespan of 20 years for ring-necked doves and 25 years for diamond doves, taking one of these birds into your life is a serious commitment.
Doves kept as pets should never be released into the wild because they lack the ability to fend for themselves or to avoid death by predation. Doves and pigeons fed traditional grain seed and bean diets have a shortened life and are often plagued with many of the problems seen in other birds on seed diets. When fed Harrison’s, these birds live a long and healthy life. For breeding birds reluctant to change eating habits, coat the grain seeds and beans with Juvenile Hand-feeding Formula mixed with an equal volume of yogurt. Racers and show birds have exhibited major physical and health improvements following this technique.
