Budgerigars are considered intelligent and nondestructive birds that are easy to care for. They are the most popular and numerous companion bird because of their relatively gentle, gregarious and entertaining personalities. They do not tend to bond with an individual person and frequently interact with all family members, including children. Budgerigars are capable of developing a large vocabulary (perhaps 200-300 words) but their voice may not be as clear as other pet bird species. The normal free-ranging budgie is green, which genetically results in higher disease resistance than other colors. Green birds probably have the longest life expectancy in captivity.
The most common disease conditions in budgerigars are often the result of malnutrition. Budgies maintained on Harrison’s Bird Foods experience longer, healthier lives, and their common health problems relating to the thyroid, fatty tumors, obesity or reproduction are not evident. Recommended Harrison’s Bird Food for adult budgies: High Potency Fine or Super Fine for 3-6 months, then Adult Lifetime Fine or Super Fine. Recommended Harrison’s Bird Food during molt or egg-laying of adult budgies: High Potency Fine or High Potency Super Fine. Recommended Harrison’s Bird Food for hand-feeding budgie chicks: Neonate Formula for the first three weeks of life, then Juvenile Formula for faster weight gain and reduced number of feedings.
